A stealthy view through the pickleweed at Harriet Mundy Marsh today
revealed that, yes, there ARE aliens lurking in Palo Alto Baylands:

investigator caught this rear-end view: http://tinyurl.com/9j534

I was driving down Hanover St., in Palo Alto, today, going from
California Ave. to Page Mill Rd. when I saw a guy pointing something
out to another guy. I followed their line of sight and saw a large
stick nest on the front edge (southern corner) of the 2-story building
at 2550. I went back to look at it and it didn't appear to be occupied
at the time. It looks like a raven's nest. I went to the north side of
the building to turn my car around and there were two more nests on
both corners of that side of the building! These weren't occupied
either, as far as I could see. This building was quite populated with
large nests! I think there were those spikey pigeon deterrents in the
areas of the nests. They must hold nesting sticks really well!

Hello,
I'm not the most expert of birdwatchers, but at around 7AM, walking on the
road continuing past the gate at the end of Motebellow Road, I saw an
immense bird perched on top of a power line pole at the antenna staion about
0.5 mile up the road. It was basically as tall as the transformer beneath
it. As I approached, it flew while being harrassed by what I think was a
red-tail in a light phase. It flew east down the slope. The dihedral was NOT
that of a golden eagle although I am mindful of the eagle sightings reported
last week in the Los Altos Hills. It seemed to show the "fingers" at the
wingtips. I had no binoculars and I realize this may be unlikely, but I
recall a condor sighting a year or so ago in this area. Hannes Vogel

Kris Olson suggested that area birders would be interested in the PYGMY
NUTHATCHES nesting in the palm tree directly in front of 303 Laurel Ave.,
Menlo
Park, close to Pope St.
The best view is from the other side of Laurel, directly across from
the tree. On Sat. 14 May, Curtis and I first observed a pair taking
nesting
materials to their hole, which is the hole at 7 o'clock from a second hole
very close by (there are many holes in this palm!).
The nuthatches' palm is immediately west of this year's BARN OWL nest
palm.
        Good birding,
              Tate Snyder
