[SBB] Black-chinned Hummingbird (Guadalupe River)

Folks:

I birded the Guadalupe River this morning, 5/22/2005, walking downstream from Curtner to below Malone (at the water tank). I was just about skunked on BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS, although there were good numbers of pale-bellied birds which may well have been female Black-chins rather than juv. female Anna's. On my way back, however, I found a female Black-chin with a nest (almost certainly the one Linda Sullivan found a week or so back) and shortly after I had a single male slightly upstream.

If you bird this stretch, it helps if you can pretend that there are no cars whizzing past most of the time. Linda's nest is quite accessible and can probably be refound with patience (and also with little disturbance to the female as long as you stand beside the road). The nest is in a locust of some sort across from 2190 Almaden Road. There is a road sign here that says "NO Stopping at any time." The nest is about 3 m above the ground and 2 m north of the sign on a level branch in the locust. It is most easily seen when the female pops in or out. I believe she is still incubating.
