[SBB] Ulistac Natural Area

I decided to bird Ulistac again today, since I wanted to practice LBB
detection, and I was hoping it might be fruitful for woodpeckers.

There were a lot of little brown birds wandering around, by the time
I traversed the park, I counted up at least 80-100 crowned sparrows
(including one flock of 40-50 in the trees near the pumphouse in the
SE corner); black-crowned outnumbered gold-crowned by about 8:1 or
so. I also saw four song sparrows and heard at least 3 more. The only
warbler I saw today was the yellow-rump, but I had at least six
individuals. rounding out the LBB faction were chestnut-backed
chickadees, bushtits, and as I was leaving, a yellow-rump got me
looking into a tree with at least six goldfinches in it (plus
sparrows....)

Other birds seen included 4-6 hummingbirds, scrub jays (at least
six) and mockingbirds (the one with the deformed beak not seen;
thanks, by the way, to the folks who suggested I report that to the
people researching this, they were much appreciative, and my web
posting got another report which I forwarded on). Two turkey vultures
soared by, plus one other raptor I didn't get a good look at,
largish, but not a vulture. Over on the guadalupe was a flock of
blackbirds, and I had a pair of mallards fly by from somewhere north
of tasman and a great egret flying. At Lick Mill Park where I parked,
I was visited by a Black Phoebe, ending the adventure.

Oh -- woodpeckers? Four viewings of at least three Northern Flicker
indivduals, but no other woodpeckers.

Grabbed a sandwich and drove out to EEC to eat it; the garden was
full of starlings, didn't see anthing else interesting. Realized I
was running out of time, and drove back via state and spreckles
(access limited by the city of san jose working on a sewer, with a
bunch of trucks and unhappy looking people....); a northern harrier
over the state and spreckles pond causing some bird unhappiness; a
red tail on one of the power poles; up at Jubilee, saw one burrowing
owl hanging out at its nest.
