One thing to be aware of is that this area (more Mt Umunhum, but
edging over into Loma Prieta) has long been a zone of conflict.
My 15-year-old Krebs bicycling map notes that access to the area
is disputed -- MROSD owns the land but some of the local landowners
sometimes claim otherwise, and have threatened people trying to use
apparently public trails. Then a couple of years ago (2005) there
was a shootout on Umunhum over marijuana growing that left a game
warden seriously injured:

No idea what might have happened recently to make MROSD suddenly
more leery, but hearing weird stories involving access to this area
is nothing new, and I suspect there's a lot going on there that
never makes the local newspapers.

Googling for the shooting story, I found a long page full of
old comments regarding access to the Umunhum area, which
includes some scary run-ins with locals:

I've had an encounter like that myself (similar to story #34 on that
page). Again, it's Umunhum, not Loma Prieta, but they're close enough
that I'm fairly sure Loma Prieta gets some of the same activity.
