I just had to share -
Ruth's posting inspired me to post.
For four days now I have been watching a pair of
STELLAR JAYS build their nest above my office window
in the Saratoga foothills. Both working equally as
hard.
They selected a beam that sticks out of the side of
the house and under the roof line. They pulled weeds,
gathered string, came up with a clothes line and
grasses etc. and have built quite a large nest. From
below it looks to be about 15 inches across.
Now they are going off to some distant spot to gather
mud. (There is no running water near the nest)
Both have been nearly silent through this process, but
from my desk I can hear them at times as they softly
chatter to each other when they find themselves at the
nest together. Who would have thought that Stellars
could whisper!
This is just the beginning as the cloacal kissing, egg
laying, incubation and chick rearing are next!
