At about 1pm I was at the Sunnyvale WPCP, but almost to the Moffet
fence. A bird flew overhead making short raspy sounds a couple of
times. I didn't recognize the sound. It landed on the fence. It was
at least as big as a starling. It was very dark, but I'd say not
black. There was yellow on the head and down the front except for a
black mask connecting to the beak. The breast looked like it had a
small inverted V of black (like a black phoebe). But the beak was thick,
not like an oriole. The top of the head looked not so yellow and the
bird had the look of a plumage that was in transition. There was no
white wing patch observed. My view of the bird was short (15
seconds?). It flew over to the rushes by the levy around the west
pond. It would have taken me a long time to move that 30' without
swimming. It was with another bird of the same size but much less
marked that I didn't get a look at.
The best fit for this is YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
Funny that Chuq spotted a similar bird in SMO at almost the same time.
