This morning, 3/12/07, I walked out to the line
shack from Twin Gates in Grant Ranch CP. At 8:30 am, the first bird I saw
as I got out of the car was a male PHAINOPEPLA. It was in the
mistletoe-covered tree just west of the Twin Gates parking and north of the
road. Other birds: just two HORNED LARKs, perhaps 20 LARK SPARROWs, a
RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW (a first for me on this walk), and WESTERN
BLUEBIRDS. The oaks are just beginning to leaf out in these high
grasslands.
