The Black Skimmers have returned to Charleston Slough. They were on the island until 4:23pm today. I have a photo showing 21 of them.
At 4:48pm today, the Short-eared Owl flew over the top of the Byxbee Park Hills. It came very close to a group of birders as a gull chased it. Unfortunately, I wasn't among that group, so my photo is very poor. Shortly thereafter, it perched on a fence by the landfill, and it remained there until sunset. Photos are here:
