Here are a few highlights seen today (Sat, 1/6) on an SCVAS field trip to
Ogier Ponds led by Rich Page.
On the northern ponds we saw a male BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a male N. PINTAIL
associating with several AMERICAN WIGEONS, a HORNED GREBE, one MEW GULL among an
assortment of gulls (looked like mostly California and Herring), an OSPREY
flying in to stir things up, and several swallows (mostly TREE SWALLOWS, but at
least one VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW was in the mix).
On the southern ponds closest to the model airplane field four handsome
HOODED MERGANSERS flew in - three males and one female. It appeared as if
the males were vying for the attention of the female with chasing
and posturing. We also saw pair of COMMON MERGANSERS on
another small pond. And finally we stopped by the airplane field to watch
a flycatching SAY'S PHOEBE darting about.
I didn't take extensive notes so others on the field trip may have more to
add. A nice morning.
