Spent the day today (1/6/07) in parts of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Chased some of the rarities and built up the year list. Managed 109 species for the day. Highlights from Santa Clara county (times are approximate):
SPOTTED SANDPIPER - San Francisquito Creek at 101 arond 815AM
HOODED MERGANSER - 3 at the pond at Geng Road at 830AM
CACKLING GEESE - 6 at Byxbee Park at 900AM
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - at least 2 at Shoreline Lake at 930AM
SNOW GEESE - 2 near the kite flying area Shoreline Park at 10AM
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH - 1 at Stevens Creek, nearer to La Avenida at 1030AM
BURROWING OWL - 2 on the Vista Slope at Shoreline about 1130AM, 1 at Byxbee at 330PM
SAY'S PHOEBE - on the Vista Slope at Shoreline about 1130AM
BLUE-GRAY GNATCHER - Emily Renzel Wetlands as previously reported around noon
SHORT-EARED OWL - in flight over the marsh, from Byxbee, at 4PM
Looked for and missed the Black-throated Gray Warbler at Stevens Creek, the White-throated Sparrow at Matedero Creek and the Brant.
