[SBB] Great day of birding!

Hi all!

Yesterday, January 6, 2007, I completed a rarities chase.  Total species seen for the day was 93 and wasn’t even trying for number of species!  Highlights were:

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (adult male) at Ed Levin in the Tamarisks

Red-breasted Sapsuckers (2 adult males at same location)

Mew Gull (35 at State and Spreckles)

Dunlin (10+ seen at State and Spreckles)

Orange-crowned Warbler (at EEC)

Cackling Geese (2 at EEC)

Cooper’s Hawk eating at White-crowned Sparrow (at Shoreline Golf Course)

Merlin (at Shoreline Golf Course)

Eurasian Widgeon (in ponds across from Shoreline Golf Course)

Horned Grebe (2 in Shoreline Lake)

Eared Grebe (several in Shoreline Lake)

Barrow’s Goldeneye (pair seen at close range of 30’ in Shoreline Lake - best looks ever!)

Greater Yellowlegs (2 at Shoreline Lake)

Black Skimmers (many on island at San Antonio Rd. area)

Lesser Yellowlegs (several at Byxbee Park calling as they flew short distances)

Clapper Rail (feeding with entire neck and upper body in one muddy hole - the bird was a muddy mess at Byxbee Park)

Short-eared Owl (at Byxbee Park had several good looks as it flew and perched on fence overlooking the dump)

Happy Birding!

Jean Myers
