Re: [SBB] Baird's Sandpiper in New Chicago Marsh

I have never corrected Bob Reiling in my life, nor do I plan to do so in the future, but I have to correct the ID of "Chris Meyers and "Pam" birding with Les Chibana.  Bob did indeed spot an out of area and rarely seen Les Chibana, but he was accompanied by Lisa Myers and Patty McGann.

And while we were out in Alviso this morning we found nothing unsusual to report but we did enjoy several VAUX'S SWIFT at State and Spreckles and a GOLDEN EAGLE over pond A16.  Checking the field behind the church revealed two BURROWING OWLS and a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE.

P.S. The SFBBO California Fall Challenge is getting warmed up allowing the opportunity to bird some fantastic Santa Clara county habitat. If you wish to learn more do let me know.

All,

Early this afternoon (8/25,12:25 PM on) Frank Vanslager and I had a juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPER in the channel on the north side of the Environmental Education Center entrance road about half way between the railroad tracks and where the road curves left toward the headquarters bldg.  When I left at 1:15 the bird had finished feeding and was finishing up preening while standing on the edge of the channel.  Frank was still observing the bird when I left.  Much earlier I had what I thought was a BASA on one of the islands in the pond at State and Spreckles.  I first spotted the bird, at some distance, with my binos and only got a very short view in the scope (maybe a one second scope view) before the bird flew toward the east into the marsh, I suppose that this could be the same juvenile BASA that was well seen later near the entrance road.  Another rarity today at the EEC headquarters was the seldom seen Hawaiian (Big Island!) Les Chibana (birding with Chris Meyers and Pam ?)

Take care,
Bob Reiling
