[SBB] Alviso salt ponds - 8/25/07

All,

Today 8/25/07, Mike Mammoser, Richard Jeffers, and I birded most of the day in Alviso for our monthly Snowy Plover survey. In areas open to the public we found:

SNOWY PLOVER - 1 in the impoundment north of the Alviso Marina

RED KNOT - 5 in north-central pond A9

LEAST TERNS - 42+ on the west part of the dike separating ponds A9 and A10 and foraging nearby

BLACK TERN - 1 (apparently juvenile) flying from pond A10 across Alviso Slough to pond A7

BLACK SKIMMERS - pairs on islands one (two small young) and two (one vocal largish young) on pond A16

OSPREY - over Mallard Slough north of the EEC

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER - 1 juvenile with peeps at the north end of the State and Spreckles pond.

And finally, we saw a first-winter FRANKLIN'S GULL flying over an area not open to the public, but tracked it in a scope to the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant, where we were able to refind it on the west pond at 12:18pm. It has more gray in the mantle than the FRGU I saw here 31 July, but that may be expected of a bird continuing to molt into first basic plumage, so it is unclear whether this is the same bird - or a new individual - after a few weeks of no observations.
