Folks:
This morning, 8/14/07, I made a CW loop of New Chicago Marsh and Salt
Pond A16 from the new gate, around by the RR tracks and back by the
south levee of Salt Pond A16. I saw four SNOWY PLOVERS from the A16
levee in the pond between there and the RR spur just before it joins
the main track. I counted six LESSER YELLOWLEGS in various spots in
the marsh. Throughout were many mixed flocks of phalaropes, I
tallied 639 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and 585 WILSON'S. One basic BLACK
TERN flew along the south levee and then off into the
marsh. Apparently some additional adult BLACK SKIMMERS have come to
Salt Pond A16 as I saw three flying about the various islands as well
as the two resident pairs. The second island pair is still present,
although I could only see one chick (which was fed a substantial
fish). The pair on the first island, surrounded by gulls, still
appears to be incubating. I saw two BURROWING OWLS in the marsh, one
in the usual spot to the north along the entrance road just after the
RR spur, and a second near the new gate.
On Disk Drive, I counted 2 BURROWING OWLS on my drive in and 3 going
out, both east of the road.
