I had 2 singing YELLOW WARBLERS along Alamitos Rd on the O'Day property near the intersection of Hicks Rd on Sunday, 30 Apr 06. Other birds in this area included a silent OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, a couple of WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES engaging in courtship chasing, and a few HOUSE WRENS.
On Monday, 1 May 06, I headed up to Smith Creek with some friends from SFBBO. The migrant activity wasn't much to speak of, but we did have 3+ WESTERN TANAGERS. A number of WILD TURKEYS were calling and working the hillsides. Other birds seen or heard were probably residents.
Down by Grant Lake in Hall's Valley we had 3 BUFFLEHEAD lingering on the water. A COMMON MOORHEN was present as well, and a pair of GOLDEN EAGLES was soaring over the hills east of the lake.
Later in the afternoon I went to Almaden Lake and saw the COMMON LOON that has been hanging out there.
Also present were the 2 WESTERN GREBES and 2 CASPIAN TERNS. I had a flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS here that numbered about 600; easily the largest group of this species I have ever seen at one time.
On the way home I stopped at the vernal pool along Santa Teresa just north of Bailey. Not much of interest here, but a MERLIN did zip by low over the water, as if hunting. Also had a RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW singing from the hillside on the other side of the road.
