On 19 Apr 06 I went to the south county and walked the west levee of Llagas Creek off of Bloomfield Ave. A few migrants were around and included a male WESTERN TANAGER, a few WILSON'S WARBLERS, and a group of 4 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS. A single FOX SPARROW was lingering. A wet field off the levee had 2 WHIMBREL associating with about a dozen GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Another wet area had 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS with a small flock of LEAST SANDPIPERS.
WHITE-TAILED KITES were building a nest in the creek's willows about a quarter mile north of Bloomfield. I watched a food transfer between a male and female NORTHERN HARRIER near the field where they have nested previously. The ponds west of the levee included ducks such as NORTHERN SHOVELER, AMERICAN WIGEON, RUDDY DUCK, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and CINNAMON TEAL.
On the way out, a handful of CANADA GEESE flew by accompanied by a single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.
Although this bird had some black spots on the breast, it didn't give me the impression of a full adult.
On 20 Apr 06 I went to Hellyer County Park at Cottonwood Lake to bird the creek trail. When I exited my car at the lake, the tree I was parked under had a small flock of warblers that included a handful of YELLOW-RUMPED, a couple ORANGE-CROWNED, a BLACK-THROATED GRAY, and a NASHVILLE.
