Today, my two kids and I hiked up the Mine Hill trail at Almaden
Quicksilver park, from 1:30 to 3:15pm. Not the best time of day for
birding, but there was still plenty of activity. I heard (but did not
see) my first of year ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER (two locations), but
nothing else was out of the ordinary... except this:
At a likely-looking patch of chemise, sagebrush, and other chaparral,
I 'pished' for a few seconds, hoping for a blue-grey gnatcatcher. A
bird called back, alright! Not five feet in front of me, a WILD
TURKEY let loose with a resounding "GOBBLE-GOBBLE!" I nearly fell off
the hillside in my startlement.
Who knew that Turkeys responded to pishing?
