[SBB] Gilroy birds

South Bay Birders,

This afternoon (17 May), a female Yellow-headed Blackbird was at the entrance to the Gilroy sewage treatment plant. The bird was in a bush near cattails at the corner of the large pond just east of the entrance gate, and could be well seen from outside the plant.

East of Gilroy, I had a pair of Cassin's Kingbirds, one of the birds sitting on a nest in an incubating position. Unfortunately, the birds are on private property, but birders should look for this species around groves of eucalyptus trees in grassland or agricultural land in the Gilroy area (it becomes suddenly more regular just to the south in San Benito County). This is the second Santa Clara County breeding record for Cassin's Kingbird.

Just over the county line in San Benito, a male Great-tailed Grackle was at San Felipe Lake.

Good birding,

Steve Rottenborn
