After getting good close photos of the Ruff at Alviso
Saturday morning, I was ready to start buying lottery
tickets. Instead, I went back to Half Moon Bay for
another shot at the raptor festival. When the hawks
and kites and harriers retire for the day, the Barn
Owls take over. It's an amazing sensation to be standing
out in the middle of that field in the very last glimmer
of the dying light with 10 or 12 or 15 Barn Owls zooming
around you. (In such low light, it's hard to count.)
In any case, I had to take a stab at photographing
them. Pix of the Barn Owls (and the Ruff) are at:

BTW, while there's no way knowing this without
getting undergraduates to count, I got the feeling
today that the peak of the feeding frenzy may have
passed. It seemed like fewer birds were around
today and a couple of species were absent.
