Tom,
Hugh Harvey and I saw two different Ruffs on Tuesday (9/25) around noon,
on the road to the entrance to the EEC, one on each side of the road, at
the same time. The one on the right side of the road going in was near
a Lesser Yellowlegs. The one on the left side of the road going in was
near a Killdeer and some Least Sandpipers. So, there are indeed two
separate birds! Neither of the birds could be found after having lunch
at the picnic table at the center. We also had the Brown Booby out in
front of the levy between A11 and A12 earlier. Originally it had been
in close on the near shore of A11. While looking at other birds, it
apparently went over the levy and out of sight. The White-faced Ibis
was in the mud flat along the slough on the left during the low tide in
the morning (we got there around 9:15 a.m.) but had gone by the time we
walked back after the water had risen.
I thought that Hugh had hotlined these birds, but perhaps not.

Pictures of a juvenile male RUFF (or two), one taken on the southeast
side
of the road shortly after 8, the second (with two LESSER YELLOWLEGS) on
the
northwest side, better for morning photography, around 10, at which
point
Ron Wolf had located it there. Ron has posted his excellent pictures;
you
can see that we shared a bit of extra luck when the Yellowlegs posed
together with the Ruff.
I saw what I thought was a second RUFF on the southeast side at 8, and I
also thought I saw a second Ruff still on that side at 10. Looking at
the
two pictures I've posted, taken two hours apart, my best guess is that
they
show the same bird, but I'm not sure (opinions welcome.) If no one else
reports seeing two Ruffs around the EEC entry road, I'll have to suspect
I
just saw the same bird at different places at 8, and was mistaken when I
thought I saw one on the southeast side at 10.
Anyway pictures of "at least one Ruff" are now up at
http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/latest .
OT, some pics I took on yesterday's Shearwater pelagic on Monterey Bay
are
up at http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/montereypelagic_sept07 .
