This afternoon, 12 Sep 07, I found 2 juvenile RUFFS in
New Chicago Marsh, among the little islands at the
north end of the State and Spreckles pond. Both these
birds were distinctly smaller than a Greater
Yellowlegs and may be females, but no dowitchers were
nearby to make a direct comparison. One bird was
slightly buffier in the breast and upperpart edgings,
and both birds had dull greenish-yellow legs and fresh
crisp feathering.
There were also 2 STILT SANDPIPERS in the first pond
on the right as one walks out the railroad tracks.
Two adult BLACK SKIMMERS were defending a single
half-grown young bird on the first island in salt pond
A16.
