I birded at Almaden Lake around 10:30 am. today, Sept. 4th.
As I walked along the Alamitos Creek trail south of the lake, a whitish
dove flew into the top of a Sycamore Tree on the west side of the creek.
This dove was larger and lighter than nearby doves and had a black mark
on the back of its neck. It was a EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE, the first I've
seen in Almaden Valley. I walked across the pedestrian bridge to get
closer to the bird and flushed another ECDO.
A short time later I heard a loud dry chip call from the creek bank and
found a MACGILLIVRAYS WARBLER foraging low in some willow trees. It was
brighter than the MGWA seen on the Guadalupe River Trail last week. Both
species were seen a few yards south of the pedestrian bridge from the
trail on the east side of the creek.
