All,
I just wonder what a good eastern birder would think of Peggy's photos if
they didn't know that they were taken on the west coast? In birding one
quickly becomes aware of what sort of bird is possible (or not possible) in a
given area. Unfortunately this bias is almost impossible to ignore as we
become more experienced birders. I find it unfortunate that those
who are best able to ID this bird were unable to actually view it, even
after photos were made available and questions raised.
In my opinion Peggy's photos, left-front and
right-front views, do show streaking in the middle of the breast
(streaking is clearly on the front edges of the breast in both views). My
feeling is that if this Idea is accepted (that there is streaking on the
chest) that it would then become just another key ID mark for
RBGR (along with pink bills and broad flank streaking) that would not apply
to hatch year birds.
For what it's worth to those of us who saw the bird it was immediately
obvious that it was not a "normal" BHGR (several BHGR were seen in the
vicinity while looking for the "RBGR").
Take care,
