On a tip from a friend, I swung by the duck pond at the SV community
center (550 E. Remington Dr. @ Manet). Yesterday 10/3 there were twelve
female COMMON MERGANSERS, twelve on the day before, and three on 10/1.
Three of them seem to prefer sitting right on the west drain, which puts
them only 10' or so from the pond edge, making for a very close look if
you don't spook them. I understand that it's common for them to form
single-sex flocks before they start pairing up, but I don't recall ever
seeing males in the bay area, only females. Is there a reason for this,
other than my bad luck?
Also present were a single COOT and a CALIFORNIA GULL, who was harassing
some of the Mergansers, bunches of Mallards, and an alligator floating
nearby (made of plastic, fortunately).
Paul
