[SBB] NOWA(s?) continue along Stevens Creek

All,

This morning 10/4/07, I once again birded along Stevens Creek between
L'Avenida and Crittenden Lane. The creek water level is low right now,
exposing lots of mud edge that is perfect for waterthrushes. Sure
enough, I enjoyed great looks at a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH for 15 minutes
in the east channel just where the riparian trees start north of
L'Avenida. On my return just over an hour later, what was apparently the
same bird was again cooperative in the west channel. Halfway between
these observations I saw a confiding NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH over a
half-mile further north, about 60 yards south of the lone eucalyptus.
Careful study of both of these birds showed them to be substantially
similar in appearance in terms of supercilium color, underpart and flank
coloration, leg coloration, and underpart streaking, although it did
seem to me that the southern bird had crisper and heavier streaks across
the breast, and perhaps a whiter base color to the mid-breast. Given the
distance between the sightings and how happy each bird was with its
local foraging opportunities, it seems that they were likely two
different birds.

Otherwise migrants were in low numbers, with only 1 "WESTERN"
FLYCATCHER, 2 HOUSE WRENS, 1 HERMIT THRUSH, 2+ YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS, and 1 WILSON'S WARBLER being found. There were many
sparrows about, including two singing FOX SPARROWS, expected at this
time of year, but also one singing LINCOLN'S SPARROW, which is much less
typical.
