Re: [SBB] Blufftop park Hawk Festival

Folks

I think that the raptors are fewer now, but there are still plenty of
them around. Yesterday I saw 5 or so kites, 3-4 harriers, 3-4 Red-tailed
Hawks, 1 American Kestrel and one juvenile Peregrine Falcon at the Half Moon
Bay cliffs. The Peregrine was a rather dark one, it may have been a
northwestern Peale's subspecies. I live about a block away from the action,
and while slower, I would not say that the festival is over yet. I am still
waiting for that dang Eurasian Kestrel to make it over! Also, it is late
enough in the season now to begin looking for Short-eared Owls in the
evening.

Good birding

I went out to the coast for a bit today, and stopped by Blufftop. Very
quiet -- three kites and two red-tails while I was there. Talking to
one of the residents with a house facing the park, they said it'd
really died down over the last week, so it looks like the hawk
festival is over, at least for now.

Also wandered by Fitzgerald really quick while I was out there -- very
low tide, which was nice, and the place was loaded with gulls, almost
exclusively adult plumage, and nothing particularly unusual (100+)
that I noticed. Only bird of remote note were two yellow-rumps that
were working the kelp and rocks on the beach looking for bugs and
chipping. Also two ravens in the lot when I got there, and a black
phoebe posing for photos. I call that a slow day...
