Hi all,

First, do not get hopeful about getting a use permit for Loma Prieta 
as things currently stand.  While my permit to park behind the 
barrier was in process I mentioned to the MROSD staffer that issues 
them that some other birders would likely be interested.  I was told 
in no uncertain terms that my permit was being issued on an exception 
basis and that NO other permits for this purpose would be issued. 
People could call but they would not get permits!

The rest of the story, short version.  Monday, 5/14, I had an 
encounter with a MROSD ranger in the subject parking area behind the 
guard rail.  The ranger talked about about a variety of  things and 
policy and no specific violations were actually mentioned.  But I was 
being made to feel unwelcome.  In the end the ranger said he was not 
going to ask me to leave but that I should consider getting  a permit 
before I returned.  That same afternoon I was in the Los Altos admin 
office asking for a permit.  Perhaps being able to quote the ranger 
on getting a permit helped my case?

I had been thinking that other harmless birder types encountering a 
ranger on Loma Prieta would be getting the same gentle warning I got 
but Sidd's experience indicates otherwise.  It has escalated.
