This morning I went birding by ear on Loma Prieta. This happen when you accidentally leave your binoculars at home. I arrived shortly after eight and parked just inside the newly constructed guard rails (which are apparently positioned to receive a gate!!!). A couple people were leaving, having just seen black-chinned sparrow(s) between the dirt road up to the towers and the paved road below.
Having no success there, I walked up the dirt road and saw three sage sparrow just above the gate. Around 9 Dean Manley showed up, and we saw 1-2 sage sparrows again near the gate, and around ten o'clock 1-2 black-chinned sparrows were singing in the vicinity where the folks had seen them earlier.
I counted 8 species of butterflies, including those magnificent California tortoiseshells that Bill mentioned.
