Shortly after 10 this morning (5/18) Frank Vanslager and I had great
views of a singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW on the southern slope of Bald Mountain
(about 100 yds from where the trail makes a hard left toward the north).
The bird was first heard singing far down the hill into the valley. Later
it flew into a low, dark green bush with small purple flowers
about 100 feet from us (the bush that was closest to us) and
after a few seconds it moved to the top of the bush and sang. Several
seconds later the BCSP flew to the right and was lost to view when it made a
hard left turn. We were unable to re-find the bird over the next 45
minutes but a BCSP was later heard singing about a third of the distance back to
the parking area.
