I visited Mt Madonna County Park for a while on (fittingly) Mother's Day, May 13, and noted a few birds of interest. A pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS was on the slope behind the fallow deer pen area. Much calling. Another PILEATED was near Poleline Road south of Tan Oak Campground. I watched a HERMIT THRUSH gathering nest material at the Miller House Site, near the deer pen. It came a few times to get some very fine pieces of grass growing near some old plantings of lavender cotton, and disappeared into the nearby understory. Last, two AMERICAN CROWS flew in and visited the water trough in the deer pen. I'm not sure if they now might be regular in that area, but in my experience they are not regularly noted in any area along the crest of the Santa Cruz mountains in SCL / SCZ.
