I mentioned the other day that we had a crow's nest in a nearby tree.
Well, tonight, we had what can only be called a riot (or perhaps a
circus) in the backyard. When I got home, Laurie told me to look at
the Barbeque. Sure enough, we had a baby crow, just fledged, who
evidently went adventuring, and the adventure ended on the barbeque.
(picture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chuqui/502824168/)
the family ahs been hanging around making sure the local cats don't
get too interested, but the baby hasn't shown much willingness to fly
UP, as opposed to wandering down. At times, we've had upwards of 6-7
crows in the backyard arguing (and not all of them seem to be friends
of the baby, I've seen at least one round of some crows trying to fly
into the nest to be chased away by other ones....).
To add to the fun, the local cooper's hawk that lives over in central
park somewhere wandered by for a look, but left again in a bit of a
hurry.
The baby finally decided to leave the BBQ, but ended up instead on the
ground huddling next to our patio window. With that, the family went
absolutely bonkers. I decided to see if I could help, and I caught the
thing in a towel, and got it to stand on a trellis, which I used to
hoist it up into one of the really big trees here. Not near its nest,
but if it stays up there, it'll be safe from the cats and other things
that go bump in the night (we're having regular visitations by the
racoons right now, and had two of them have a serious fight on the
roof two nights ago; sounded like they were going to come through....)
The bird's not hurt, just young. Not sure this is a situation for
wildlife rescue in any case; hopefully, it'll be smart enough to hang
loose in the tree tonight, and it and mom and dad can figure it out
tomorrow. I'll try to keep an eye on things and see what happens...
