The past two mornings I have been exploring the Steven's Creek Nature Trail
for the first time, trying to (re)locate some migrants. Today I had better
luck than yesterday, with a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, one WARBLING VIREO, five
WILSON'S WARBLERS, two NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and the very late and
lingering GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW. This Golden-crowned Sparrow got my
attention because it was making some low call notes that I thought might
have been Swainson's Thrush, so I pished it up. I saw then it was a
Golden-crowned, but what surprised me was that it sat up on a branch and
started to sing as if defending territory against my pishing. So this bird
may be more than late in leaving - it may be very confused! The GREEN HERON
was present both days, and there's a very active BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD couple
perusing local nesting activities. Three BEWICK'S WRENS sang vigorously
this morning, and one flock of over a dozen CEDAR WAXWINGS flew overhead.
On the San Jose State campus, we have a large flock of CEDAR WAXWING - I've
counted up to sixty birds in late April. They show no signs of leaving yet.
I saw them today at numerous campus locations. If you are looking for the
birds, they can often be seen perching on the tall trees to the west of the
Event Center. Campus migrant notes include appearances earlier this month
by an exuberant singing male YELLOW WARBLER, and two WILSON'S WARBLERS on
separate days.
