Hi,
In light of some confusion about Brants, I thought I better give a quick
description of the bird I saw yesterday.
It was a small goose. Almost half the size of the canadas. Head, beak
and eye were all black. Head profile was very flat on top. Neck was
black with a white ring up very high near the head. On closer looks,
the ring didn't go all the way around. It looked clearly defined on the
bottom of the ring but smudgy above. The ring did not have any pattern
like those seen in my book (National Geo). The black neck color changed
abruptly to the dark brown of the sides and back in a vertical line. In
otherwords, the front of the goose was all black except for the upper
neck. The tail looked white except for black tips. I read later that
the tail is black but is covered by white, which was consistant.
