Re: [SBB] Cliff Swallows - - and in ALA Co. - -

Greetings Janna,

Am I correct that the ClSw's, NRSw's, and the WTSw's will be nesting around and under a nearby bridge?

Although I'm on the other side of the SF Bay, swallow behavior is probably similar, thus my passing this report along.  We are beginning a data collection of Swallow occurrence in the SF Bay Area, thanks!

Our first beginning of the return of Cliff Swallows was at 7 AM, Friday, 9 March 2007 seen by Prof. Francisco Zermeno at Chabot College, Hayward, ALA Co.

This sighting will earn him a prize, for this is the fifth Year for our Return of the Swallows to Chabot College Festival.  We now have developed a free Swallows Booklet of 38 pages full of lore, artistic patterns, poems, songs, descriptions, countries of occurrence, translations in other languages, etc., etc. The school and community service organizations are involved in displays and programs on our big day.  Over 400 nests are on 10 of the campus buildings (the exact number a secret for a guessing contest).

Our main ceremonies take place the day of the Festival, Tuesday, 3 April, in the Cesar Chavez Plaza at 12  Noon - prizes are presented for contests in art, photography, literature, music, etc.  Since Nature and Wildlife are the focus, many exhibits show this.  Returning will be a giant (live) Insect Collection. An early Ice Age collection of fossils of Mammoth, Horse, Camel, Ground Sloth, Giant Short-faced Cave Bear, Dire Wolf, Four-pronged Antelope from the nearby Irvington, Fremont gravel pits will be displayed. They are from the Wes Gordon Fossil Hall at Math/Science Nucleus, Fremont. Two days of field trips to swallow flying and nesting locales in southern Alameda County (including for close up photo ops);  they'll be on 21 & 22 April 2007.

Happy Birding and Hooray for our Argentinean visitors, the Cliff (and Barn) Swallows.
