[SBB] palo alto duck pond

Popped by the duck pond today for my weekly visit to the rookery. It seems to be settling down; it looks like a lot of the great egrets have taken off, most of the birds left are snowy, and almost all of them seem to be fledged and moving about and out of the nest.

In looking at my rookery pictures for 2006, it looks to me like the rookery is about a week to ten days ahead of the same time last year.

highlight of the morning (other than chatting with some of the others there this morning) was when two american coots came out onto the pond with three chicks and started bringing up food from the bottom to feed them. Even the coot chicks are cute...

There were two killdeer in the gravel lot between the ranger station and the path to the interpretive center where they close it off when the killdeers nest. It's been re-opened, but I wonder if we have a pair thinking of nesting.

No sign of the pheasants today, but it continues to be a bumper year for jackrabbits...
