[SBB] Pajaro River birds

All,

Thanks to Steve Rottenborn's recent report on the area this morning Frank Vanslager and I birded the Santa Clara County side of the Pajaro River (along railroad tracks) for about two miles from just north of where the river crosses Hwy 101 to where the tracks (and river) make a hard right turn toward the coast and Watsonville.  The trip was fairly birdy despite the very strong winds in the area (it wasn't windy in the Bay Area?).  We did manage to find one adult male BLUE GROSBEAK in the fields west of the tracks.  Unfortunately we saw very little in the trees and bushes along the river but did hear many singing SWAINSON'S THRUSH (at least 15), several singing WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, a singing PURPLE FINCH, a singing LAZULI BUNTING, a singing HUTTON'S VIREO and at least one GRASSHOPPER SPARROW (Frank managed to hear over the wind in the fields west of the tracks),  Seen birds included many ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS, a pair of closely interacting WESTERN KINGBIRDS, two WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, a male WILSON'S WARBLER, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, an OAK TITMOUSE, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, and NUTTALL'S WOODPECKERS as well as many of the usual riparian corridor species.  I'd love to bird this when it's not so windy,

Take care,
Bob Reiling
