On Friday, 13 Jul 07, I visited New Chicago Marsh.
Walking out the railroad tracks, I noticed about 1500
peeps, predominantly WESTERN SANDPIPERS, spread
throughout the marsh. There were 2 SNOWY PLOVERS out
there, one in the pond west of the tracks in the
northwest corner of the marsh and the other along the
east side of the tracks further south of there.
Out on salt pond A16 an immature PEREGRINE FALCON was
raising hell with the tern colony. It would fly out
above the islands, as a cloud of FORSTERS TERNS rose
up to meet it, and then take some swipes at them. Then
it perched on the levee for many minutes, allowing me
to get within about 40 yards, before giving the terns
another go.
A pair of BLACK SKIMMERS was on the second island, and
they are incubating eggs there.
On Saturday, 14 Jul 07, I stopped by Charleston
Slough. I found 2 male AMERICAN WIGEONS on Adobe
Creek. One of them had no primary feathers on either
wing, but the other seemed OK.
Back at New Chicago Marsh I ran into Jim Thomas and we
watched an adult PEREGRINE FALCON take a sandpiper out
of a flock composed mainly of LEASTS.
