I did a walk around shoreline lake and out to the salt pond to the east of the park today. Pretty much the usual suspects (and the Common Loon continues...), but I did have three flights of peeps fly through while I was in the area, first I've seen of them for a
while. One was about 20 birds, one around 35, and one at least 50.
On the island inside the lake was one black skimmer. I thought I saw a second, but when I took a close look with the binocs, it'd either taken off or hidden (or was never there... choose one). Close examination of the photos under magnification showed two tern chicks, both older, about 2/3 of the size of an adult, still downy grey on top, white underneath and with the beginnings of a black band across the eyes.
On the tern island in the salt pond putting the photos under magnification found two young chicks, maybe 1/3 the size of an adult and basically a round puffball and brownish, not grey. Most of the terns are still sitting on both islands; each island seemed to have one avocet nest as well. Way out on the eastern boundary of the salt pond were numbers of both white and brown pelicans.
the marsh where the stilts had the chick had no stilts today, but had two avocets instead. Hopefully, they relocated...
