[SBB] Ruffmania and other stuff

Folks:

Today, 1/26/07, I stopped by the Alviso EEC and Salt Pond A16
midday. In A16, I checked the islands for gulls and found a
1st-winter GLACOUS GULL on the second island. Walking on, I found a
second bird on the fourth island. (Or maybe I didn't, as the initial
bird was no longer around when I walked back. Both (The) bird(s)
showed juvenile mantle feathers and a pink bill with the distal third
black. Seven CACKLING GEESE are still out in A16 (The looked more
like _minima_ to me, rather than _leucopareia_). I also scoped the
near part of Salt Pond A18 and spotted a male EURASIAN WIGEON among
the thousands of wigeons and a male REDHEAD as well. I ran into Dean
Manley and then some Santa Cruz birders: Jeff Poklen, and Wally and
Lois Goldfrank. They were looking for the Ruff, but without
success. Leaving along the entrance road, some birders had found the
male RUFF hiding in the pickleweed south of the entrance
road. Within 15 min., I counted 8 cars parked along the entrance
road (oh, what a field day for the refuge police!), all eagerly
watching this Siberian gentleman. Unfortunately, I never got the
name of the first couple that found the Ruff, but thanks. Others
enjoying the Ruff were Mike Mammoser and Ann Verdi.
