Good evening all....
What a fantastic day at Vasona... The GBHE Herons are back in full force. While the two females watched for the males to bring back twigs (the males were sunning themselves on island) a single male waited for a female to come to his nest. Five herons were sunning themselves ...with 12 Black-crowned Night Herons in the reeds behind them.... Since the water is very very low at Vasona there were 6 Snipe feeding out in the open....great pictures! The Common Mergansers continue (all 26 of them) the single Hooded and two female are still there... 2 Mew Gulls amongst the Ring-billed Gulls. 1 Greater Yellow-legs. The numbers of Killdeer is just so amazing...I counted 60+ today. Also, lots of Canada Geese, with one Cackling being of Aleutian Race and three new dark breasted (and great pictures) Cackling Geese....these are super tiny! About 1/3 the size of a Canada Goose.... Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks made a showing ...Two Belted Kingfishers....Yellow-rumps all over the place....All and all great birding..... Also, took great pictures of a Ruby-crowned Kinglet that I could reach out and touch.... Stopped at Campbell Ponds and an Osprey stood tall on the top of the tree...lots of Cormorants, Gadwalls and one Lesser Scaup in Campbell Pond 1..... Wishing you all good birding and my best regards, Linda Sullivan PS...cleaned out five nesting boxes, put up one more....ah...nesting birds.... |
