[SBB] FW: Coe birds

Title: FW: Coe birds
On Saturday, January 13, Amy and I spent the day walking at Henry Coe State Park.  Birds of interest included: 15+ Hermit Thrushes, which is significantly more birds than we normally see and 4+ Golden-crowned Kinglets, our first January park record for this species.

A very odd sparrow caught our attention. We believe it was a hybrid Dark-eyed Junco/Sage Sparrow.  The bird was associating with a flock of Juncos which was foraging along the edge of a ranch road in chamise habitat.  It was essentially the same size as the nearby Juncos and had the same behaviour and foraging habits.  The build was also junco-like.  The body pattern was remeniscent of a junco but it had a blotchy hood consisting of black, grey and white feathering with no pattern that was discerable by us.  It had two bold and distinct dark malar stripes.  The back, flanks and breast were similar to the juncos, but the bird did not have white outer tail feathers.  There was no streaking on the breast or flanks.  We did not note bill or leg color.
