Hi all:
Three of us comprised the Byxbee owl patrol at dawn,
approaching the park from the Emily Renzel Wetlands
parking area. Just as I was saying "this is where I
saw the owl last time I was here" an owl came winging
in from the south. A "consolation" Barn Owl at 6:45.
Very sweet.
No Short-eared Owl was seen betw. 6:30 and 8:30 when
we gave up the vigil. It was a very pleasant 24
degrees when we got out of our cars and all
shallow-water puddles were iced over. We tip our caps
to Minnesotan birders.
We did see 6 Cackling Geese fly in with 13 Canadas on
the south side of the landfill within the fenced off
area. The nicer grassy weedy area. From there we had
extensive looks at a female Taiga-type Merlin.
We joined the rest of our birding class at 9 at the
Palo Alto Baylands Duck Pond. When we finished the
class at noon, the overwintering/here on extended stay
Snow Geese, 1 adult 1 juvenile, were on the north edge
of the pond with a flock of Canada Geese. After a
minute or so of viewing, 11 Canadas and the two Snow
Geese bolted back to the Golf Course.
We also had beautiful looks at a Clapper Rail who
showed good safety habits by looking both ways before
crossing the road from one side of Rail Corner to the
other.
Oh, and speaking of cold places for birders, there's a
wonderful show on Alaska, tonight in Campbell, if your
dance card is open. Free.

Good birding,
