[SBB] gulls redux

Today, 12 Jan 07, I returned to the EEC, where the Ruff again failed me. L

Plenty of swallows again over pond A16. I didn’t estimate any numbers, but did notice that atleast 2 of them were BARNS this time.

I found another white gull, on the first island this time. This was a different bird from yesterday in that it had no plumage patterns at all (it was completely white), had pale eyes, and a different bill pattern. It was slightly smaller than the typical Herring Gull. The bill was within the range of Herring Gull, with a black tip that blurred into the dull pinkish base. The eye was not quite as yellow as an adult Herring Gull, but was definitely pale. The legs and feet were pink. The tail extended slightly beyond the tail, about the same extent as on a Herring Gull. The eye color indicates to me a bird that is at least in its second year and I would think that a bird this age should have some gray color or pattern in its plumage. So, I’m inclined to think that the white color of this bird is a matter of leucism.

Oh yeah, the GLAUCOUS GULL was on the first island as well.
