Hi all:
Clearly channeling my need for a quick appearance this
morning, one of the short-eared owls popped up at the
east end of Palo Alto's Emily Renzel wetlands (or the
west side of the Bixbee Park landfill). This was 30
seconds after I tore myself away from two gorgeous
White-tailed Kites in sunrise sunlight.
The owl glowed in the early morning light showing off
it's beautiful white terminal tail band and trailing
edge to its flight feathers. The owl perched on a
bush, stared at me for a little while, then took off
over a set of bushes heading northwest into the marshy
area west of the landfill and just south of
Embarcadero. The owl may have kept foraging, but I
could not relocate it.
As I left the wetlands, a Great Blue Heron came
floating in and performed two swirl moves, very simple
but very elegant. The closest I could describe the
move would be when you see a surfer turn out of a wave
and then right back into the curl again. Very subtle.
Very cool. I like to think everything this time of
year has to do with courtship.
Good birding,
Bob Power
