[SBB] Mt. Hamilton CBC - 1/2/2007

All,

Mike Mammoser and I covered Isabel Valley east of Mt. Hamilton for the Mt. Hamilton Christmas Bird Count yesterday 1/2/2007. Owling our way in to the valley was productive, with 6 WESTERN SCREECH-OWLS and 1 NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL being located. On our way to the big reservoir near the ranch houses, we located a VARIED THRUSH at the hunting shack; later in the day we found at least 7 VATH there, but we had none anywhere else, keeping our total for this species quite modest.

Early morning in the valley near the ranch houses was great for raptors, as usual. We had 3 light morph FERRUGINOUS HAWKS (2 adults, 1 immature), all visible at once on their perches, and quick visits by a PRAIRIE FALCON and an adult BALD EAGLE. Four RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were found throughout the day, a high total for this far into the Diablo Range. The usual Diablo Range specialties made an appearance, with 49 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS, 1 male PHAINOPEPLA, 2 SAGE SPARROWS (one providing extended views at close range), and 49 LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES. Other passerines of note included 2 LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES (unusual in the interior of the Diablo Range), 4 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 45 LARK SPARROWS, and a single "SLATE-COLORED" FOX SPARROW among 25 "SOOTY" types. Ducks were highlighted by 115 WOOD DUCKS, 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, and 2 COMMON MERGANSERS among the much more numerous expected duck species.

All-in-all we found 80 species on a beautiful warm day!
