[SBB] Dec 31 birding at Charleston Slough

Son Andrew and I had a great time birding at Charleston
Slough yesterday--mostly the "usual suspects" for this time
of year but we counted 40-some species, and had a great time.
Some highlights:

Bufflehead, Goldeneyes (Common and Barrow's), Surf Scoter,
Eared and Horned Grebes on Shoreline Lake
Sora (in its usual place)
Hundreds and hundreds of Ruddy Ducks, quite the sight--especially
when groups of hundreds at a time "ran-flew" across the water to a new
position
American White Pelicans flying in formation, meeting other formations,
and soaring together into new patterns
Gadwalls--always a big favorite of mine
Green-winged teals
female Canvasback busy fishing--fun to watch
common yellowthroat
and, some spontaneous young-birder coaching/mentoring from
another birder we met as we watched the Northern Harrier--very kind.

What a wonderful way to end the year.

good birding!
