[SBB] Jan 1 birding at Picchetti Ranch

Went with the family today for a lovely walk at Picchetti Ranch
open space preserve.  Beautiful weather, some new birds for us
to see...

Highlights for us:

White-tailed kite - came soaring into view, up the canyonside...
soared around a couple of times, and made a landing into a tree.
Sat there a long time, peering around.  We got great views of the
bird in flight, and perched.

Townsend's warblers--saw several of these foraging in the oaks
on the hillside above the (currently dry) pond.  They were relatively
unafraid, working along the oak branches until pretty close to us.
Enjoyed seeing 2 males skirmish, 1 chasing the other off.  Our first
time seeing these birds, we enjoyed their beauty--and even
managed to show them to another family passing by on their walk.

Also saw yellow-rumped warblers; scrub jays; ruby-crowned kinglet;
Nutall's woodpecker; and tons of robins.  Very pleasant afternoon walk.

Ann Hepenstal (and Andrew Tey)
