[SBB] Santa Clara Valley Water District

The water district on Almaden Exp. was very active this afternoon at 3
pm. Twenty one Great Egrets and several Snowy Egrets gathered to take
advantage of a the low water level in the Guadalupe River channel. A
water district employee told me they're removing the dam in the next few
days.

Four Cinnamon Teal and 3 Canvasback Ducks were new arrivals. Three male
Common Mergansers and 4 females were fishing in the river channel. A
Spotted Sandpiper was working a muddy bank and a Sora was seen close to
the island on the main pond. Other duck species on the pond were Ruddy,
Ring necked, Gadwall, Mallard, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Canada
Geese and Lesser Scaup. Common Yellowthroat and Marsh Wren were active
as was a Belted Kingfisher. A Red shouldered Hawk was perched on the
east side. D.C. Cormorants were flying in to roost with noisy Red winged
Blackbirds in the large Sycamore trees.

I was looking through a close flock of White crowned Sparrows on the
ground, when an adult Coopers Hawk attacked. He sat there for a moment
stunned, then flew off to a perch. Once again the Osprey was atop one of
two tall Cedar trees near Coleman and the Almaden Exp. eating a fish.
Later as I was standing near the main pond on the north side of the
property the Osprey flew in with some gulls close behind. He raked his
talons through the water and flew off without catching anything. He
might have considered fishing in the river channel where large fish were
stranded in shallow water.

I checked for Sora from the east side of the river channel but the water
was extremely low and I saw only Killdeer, Coots and an Am. Kestrel.
From the bank I watched 32 large orange Koi swim by. I hope they don't
get stranded. The Osprey was roosting in a large Sycamore on Almaden Ex.
when I left at 5pm.
