This report is out of area but may be of interest.
Friends Frank and Joan Brauch were kind enough to ask me to bird at the
coast today. I'm sure everyone is well aware of the spectacle of birds
that's been going on for some time at Cascade Farms brussel sprout farm
on Hwy 1. You can now drive on their property, park your car in a safe
area, and follow a path to the field of birds. I'm not sure what
attracts the birds; the rotting sprouts or insect attracted to the
sprouts, although I wasn't aware of insects today. Please do not get too
adventurous and step off the trail as Joan and I did. There's a thin dry
crust over a foot horrid, stinky brussel sprout goo, which will stay
with you the rest of the day.
Our first bird was a Varied Thrush, followed by Tri-colored Blackbirds.
A flock of Cal. Quail crossed our path, then we spotted the sparrows and
warblers. Most numerous were Yellow rumped Warblers, followed by Fox
Sparrows, Song and Lincoln's Sparrows. The Townsends Warblers were not
as numerous as reported a few weeks about but we saw at least a dozen.
We also found the Slate colored Junco, an Orange crowned Warbler, Common
Yellowthroat, Winter Wren and heard a Hairy Woodpecker.
