Shao Chen and I birded at Ogier Ponds this morning 2-02-07. A Red tailed
Hawk and Coopers Hawk were perched in the orchard. An adult Peregrine
Falcon was perched on the tower near the entrance. The southern most
pond near the model airplane park held many duck species. Among them;
Canvasback, Hooded Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Lesser
Scaup, Green winged Teal, Ruddy Duck, Gadwall, and Cinnamon Teal. Also
seen were Green Heron, Common Moorhen and Marsh Wren. Four White tailed
Kites, a No. Harrier, and Meadowlarks were seen in the field or soaring.
Three pair of Wood Ducks and Belted Kingfisher were found in the creek
along with a Great Blue Heron.
Barbara Harkleroad call me up to her house at 4 pm this afternoon. Her
Slate colored Junco was back and she wanted me to see it. A definite
black hood suggests Canadian Rocky Mountain species. We watched it
forage on the ground for 15 minutes, at times beside other Dark eyed
Juncos. In comparison it appeared a bit larger with a longer tail.
Barbara's backyard is a bird magnet with many feeders and bird baths.
The open space behind her property and close proximity to the mountains
seem to attract many unusual species. I'm fortunate to be her friend and
neighbor.
